Stony Plain During The Depression

How was business like in the dusty days of the Great Depression? This story, taken from "Along The Fifth", takes a look at businesses that sprang up during those harsh times, businesses that, to this day, still endure.

An image of the page of the book containing the story can be found here.

The story looks good as a sort of family/community story. For the CIN ratings, you might want to add in the blank outline at the bottom of this story (as well as the other 2 you posted), and we'll eventually come up with the ratings - that's still kind of in the works. I think the story might be good for grades 1, 3, and 6 social studies classes. (Ref: relating local history post)

Grade 1: story fits into the "What was life like back then?" question.
Grade 3: Great Depression affected the entire world, and this story gives a glimpse of how Stony Plain endured this economic hardship.
Grade 6: the story gives a detailed description of what the Alberta government was doing to aid the people during the depression, as well as what sort of laws were put in place/existed during this period.

In regards to improvement, personally I think the story should eventually be editted according to which grade level it would be taught in; otherwise, it's a very resourceful story.

This could be used for grade 12 since it talks about the great depression and the way people survived with the changes along the years.
